UHC Summer Youth Development Programme
Thursday, 13 June 2013 13:04

As part of the clubs ongoing development our Club Coach Steven Percy has agreed to run a summer development programme for some of our younger players aged 8 to 17 that we feel require additional support to be ready for their personal challenges that lie ahead next season.

This squad will be invited to attend weekly sessions on Tuesday nights 6 - 8pm at Uddingston Grammar for seven weeks with Steven leading a squad of coaches that will deliver specialist coaching and greater on task mentoring.

The hope is that this enhanced coaching will push forward all players core skills and increase their readiness for the new season ahead.

Fields of Trust Finals At Bellahouston
Monday, 10 June 2013 08:40

Saturday the 1st of June saw Uddingstons under 10s, 12s and 14s sides take part in the Fields of Trust Finals at Bellahoustan Park.

The newest section of Uddingston Hockey Clubs Youth, the Under 10s, stood out during the tournament, winning four of their five games and drawing one; subsequently going on to win the tournament to be presented with gold medals and a plate. Everyone was impressed by not only each player’s individual effort but also the effort and awareness by such a young team highlighted by the youngest player Lucas Gardiner at 8 years old and top goal scorer Abby Blair 9 years old.

alt

The Under 12s section also impressed coaches and spectators by being undefeated, however a couple of draws cost them a medal winning position. Standing out during the under 12s games was Ross Pugh, who after some recent weeks of goalkeeping coaching, from Uddingston’s newest member of coaching team Craig Wallace, showed great alertness and composure in goal and earning many clean sheets.

alt

Unfortunately for the under 14s, they had to concede their games and play for fun as it was realised that a player was 10 days too old. However the newly put together team showed determination and individual skills to gain a few draws against strong oppositions. We hope the under 14s will continue to develop over the summer to progress into the senior teams this coming season.

alt

We also hope to see all the kids continue to train on Thursday nights, as training will not cease for the summer. Under 10s training 5.30-6.30pm and Under 12/14s training 6.30-8.00pm at Uddingston Grammar. It is encouraging to see so many of our youth players book up to attend one or both summer camps 2nd-5th July and 22nd-26th July. Anyone still interested in booking either camp please contact Ross McWilliams 07415129372 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . UHC Primary School Festival 3rd of June 2013
Monday, 10 June 2013 08:06

The Inter-School End of Term School Festival was held on the 3rd of June at Tannochside Primary School.

Understandably at such a busy time for the schools, not all schools could manage. However, most still manage to come along, bringing up to 4 teams of 7, meaning more than 100 kids playing in each of the morning and afternoon sessions.

alt

The aim of the festival was to celebrate all the hard work the children put in playing hockey during their class time PE and during after school club training sessions. It was encouraging to see the kids having a competitive spirit, even though the 10 minute games in a round robin style tournament were only for fun. The kids showed some wonderful skills and hockey knowledge as noted by each of the coaches who umpired the games.

Since the tournament, we have seen a number of new kids attending our Thursday night training sessions held at Uddingston Grammar School pitches (U10s 5.30-6.30pm, U12s & U14s 6.30-8.00pm). It was exciting to see some kids come along that had been pointed out by our coaches, who had great ability and potential.

alt

Summer Camp bookings also increased in numbers, seemingly due kids realising that their friends were booking following the festival. The camps have proven to be the best approach for kids to accelerate their hockey ability and talent as well as making new friends and bond as a team, exciting for the youth season ahead.

Anyone still interested in booking either camp (camps 2nd-5th July and 22nd-26th July) please contact Ross McWilliams 07415129372 or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Uddingston Hockey club would once again like to say a big thank you to all the schools, teachers, helpers who helped on the day and throughout the academic year. We would also like to thank the members of Uddingston Hockey Club who helped make the day a success by sorting teams and umpiring.

Vets to Face Scotland
Saturday, 01 June 2013 11:01

Uddingston Vets take centre stage this Sunday against a strong Scotland over 50's side.  A fine squad consisting of experienced legends, stubborn stalwarts,  European Hockey League royalty and the odd spritely youth head for Edinburgh to provide some competitive match practice for the national team.

Sadly Uddingston's most famous hockey playing Granddad is unable to make the match but sends on his best wishes from down under, a loud sigh of relief was heard emanating from the relative youths of the Scotland over 50 squad.

The team heads off from the club at 12pm in the Kennedy sponsored mini bus, the game is at 2pm at the Mary Erskine School pitch in Ravelston.  The boys will be heading off to hopefully celebrate their victory with some food and drink at The Baillie Bar in Stocksbridge after the match.

The mini bus is full booked but all spectators are welcome to come along and watch the match and join the team for a beer afterwards at The Baillie.

UC&SC May Board Meeting Update
Wednesday, 29 May 2013 10:57

The May main club board meeting was held on Thursday 16th and attended by President Allan McGill, Vice President Gordon Burns, Secretary Andy Baxter, Treasurer Andrew Meikle, Rugby rep Andy West, Hockey Reps David Goodfellow & Graham Beveridge and Club Convenor Suzie Elliott.

Apologies given by Bryan Clark, Ricky Bawa and Stewart Pettigrew.

The following is an update of the meeting with any questions or queries on any aspect of the club more than happy to be answered by our President Allan by emailing him at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Finance:

Membership Fees: As has been the case with the Rugby and Hockey a "no pay no play" policy will be fully enforced with the Cricket section with all fees to be paid in full by Saturday 1st June.  The club are obviously keen that no one is able to use our sporting facilities without being a fully paid up member.

Forecast: Is was reported that against the revised 6 month Forecast we are ahead of target and looking at a possible small profit for the financial year ending 30th Sep 13.  This is assuming we have no surprise expenditure that is not budgeted for.

Overdraft: The club overdraft has been renewed and is generally sitting at over £25k with the plan for the next 6 months to target ways of reducing our overdraft by as much as possible as current levels of debt are unsustainable and prohibitive in developing the club further.

Cashflow: Due to lower income over the summer months there was a risk of us going over our overdraft limit therefore each section was requested to consider a short term loan or budget reduction.  All sections agreed to these and contributed £11k to the short term reduction to the club overdraft with loans to be paid back in November when cashflow returns to normal levels.

Income: External functions still remain our main source of income out with memberships fees therefore it was agreed that these would continue to be encouraged and the club marketed fully to maximise week day and weekend nights usage via external lets / hires.

Club Upgrades:

Small Bar Furniture: This is due to be delivered mid May with it paid for in full by Burns Night fundraiser.  Small bar to be fully promoted as sports bar and main area of use by members out with Saturday section sport days.

Small Bar Window: The club has been offered by a member to replace this with a bi-folding door to not only open up the small bar to the outside but also allow an exit from the area without needing to go via the main hall.  The board agreed this would be a great addition to the small bar and club generally.  Works expected early June.

External Fence - The area outside the front of the club has now been completed.  A gate will be added to close off the area once the new bi-folding door is added.  The next phase of fence along the car parking area is ongoing and should be finished in the next week or so.

Sponsorship Boards - These have now been moved to the far end of the Cricket grounds and divided up between the cricket and main club therefore if you know of sponsors that may like to support the club by putting a board up please speak to a member of the board.  Sponsors boards will also be put up on the car park fence once completed.

Uddingston Pride - The main club have agreed to take part in this and with the help of member Audrey Platt we should see some plants and flowers popping up throughout the club during June.

Grounds Tidy Up: Final tidy up of the grounds will take place on Saturday 1st June from 10am till 12noon with all members to be invited along to help.  All help welcomed.

And finally.......

The board needs your support.  We have a lot of plans but need your help.  Please can you think how you could help the club or if you know anyone that could and speak to any member of the board to discuss getting you or them involved.

We are open to all levels of help so please support your club.

UHC Inter School Hockey Tournament
Tuesday, 28 May 2013 08:43

The 3rd of June will see the final inter school hockey matches of the academic year with a tournament organised by Uddingston Hockey Club and held once again at Tannochside Primary School.

The tournament is again to celebrate and reward the children for their hard work during class time hockey lessons and allow them to show off their newly learned skills and knowledge. Each of the 10 primary schools Uddingston Hockey club currently coach within have large, established after school or lunch time hockey clubs. From these, each school will be providing 4 teams, making the total number of kids attending the festival nearing 300.

The morning session (9.30-11.30am) will include; Chatelherault, St Mary’s, Beckford, Garrowhill and Bothwell Primaries and the afternoon session (12.30-2.30pm) will include St Brides, Muiredge, Tannochside, Aitkinhead and St John the Baptist.

This will be the third festival organised by Uddingston hockey Club. These festivals, along with occasional interschool friendlies and continual coaching sessions during school PE times has caused a massive increased interest in hockey as a sport and as hoped an increase in the numbers of kids attending Uddingston Hockey Clubs Youth Coaching sessions on Thursday evenings (U10s 5.30-6.30pm, U12s & U14s 6.30-8.00pm). We have also seen many of the children attend Uddingston Hockey Clubs Summer Time Coaching Camps (July 2nd-5th, July 22nd-26th) where pupils can attain weeks’ worth of coaching and practice in just a few days. For full details visit www.uddingstonhockeyclub.co.uk or on request by emailing  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Uddingston Hockey Club would like to take this opportunity to thank all the schools, teachers and helpers involved for their continual organising and assisting with all aspects of the in-school coaching programme.

Annual Craig McWhirther Memorial Tournament
Tuesday, 21 May 2013 22:03

This Saturday the club will host the annual tournament in memory of ex player Craig McWhirter. The tournament is between Uddingston, Glasgow University and Garscadden as Craig was proud to wear the shirt of each club in his playing career.

All Matches will be two halves of twenty minutes with the top two sides then going on to compete in the final.

We would encourage all members to come along and enjoy some excellent  hockey and hopefully some sunshine.

 alt

The tournament as been a resounding success over the years and the enjoyment and spirit which it is played is testament to how well thought of Craig was within each club. The competitive side to the tournament has always been evident with the talent on show always of high standard. Each club already having their names on the trophy, who could it be this year????

To round off a successful day, an area has been booked in the Loft in Ashton lane from 5.30pm. All players and fans are invited to come and along and toast another successful day in Craig's memory.
