FIH Rule Change Notification 2012 / 2013

For the coming Season, the FIH have introduced the following rule changes which will be implemented by the SHU in all games, at all levels, from 1st September, 2012.

These changes affect both the indoor & outdoor game as follows.

The main changes are:-

  • Own goals can be scored (indoor and outdoor)
  1. oa goal will now be scored after the ball is touched in the circle by either an attacker or a defender
  • there does not need to be a direct shot on goal for the goal to stand – any touch within the ‘D’ that diverts the ball into the goal, will count as a goal for the attacking team.
  • Free Hits can be lifted (outdoor)
  1. owhen putting the ball back into play, the ball may be lifted intentionally & directly using a push, flick or scoop (not a hit)
  • the idea behind this is to remove the potential for danger when an opponent comes within 5m from a self-pass being taken
  • any ball lifted to restart the game, must be done safely
  • Hands cannot touch the floor when the ball is being played (indoor)
  1. othis includes the hand holding the stick
  • this means the stick cannot now be placed flat on the ground
  • the intention of bringing this rule is to prevent a player blocking play in a ‘negative and unattractive way’

We don’t make the rules – we just need to adhere to them!

If anyone wishes any clarification on any of these, please feel free to contact us.

The Search For Umpires Starts Here!

As we now enter the build-up to the 2012/2013 campaign pre-season friendlies now arranged, the Club are keen to get as many of the members who have passed their umpiring theory test, assessed for their practical ‘C’ Badge.

All of the friendlies are listed on the calender, and we would ask those who are interested in applying for this qualification to check the dates and let their captain/coach know of their availability so that we can confirm suitable games and arrange assessors to be in place.

If you are not available for any of these games, but would still like to be assessed for your umpiring badge, please let us know and we can look at using selected Club league games or other West District league matches that are being planned for Sundays throughout the Season.

Likewise if you already have your ‘C’ badge and would like to progress this further, please let us know and the Club will assist in liaising with the SHU about confirming suitable National League matches and assessors.

Alan Johnston: Star of the future

After recently joining the Scotland U16 squad, we look back at how star of the future, Alan Johnston has developed through the youth ranks:

Alan started showing an interest in hockey when he attended the local gala day when he was 6 years old where Uddingston Hockey Club had a stand where they had to flick a ball into small targets. He then attended the junior training sessions on a Thursday night at the Hamilton Palace Sports ground with Richard Cuthbert being the main coach. After showing some potential he attended the U10/U12 tournaments with the Club and continued to improve with each game.

Alan attended Newfield Primary School Stonehouse before moving to Larkhall Academy, at the age of 11 he was asked to play with the Uddingston Gents 4th XI. His other hobbies included swimming and football, however these took a back seat whilst his interest in hockey flourished.

Alan started the senior training with the Uddingston 1st XI at twelve years old, he continually progressed under the coaching of Steven Percy and Nairn Scobie which helped his interest and desire to stay playing hockey, as his skills improved Alan played a few games with the Uddingston 3rd XI and will now play an a major part in the development squad in the coming 2012/13 season.

Alan was eventually put forward to the West District Selection in March 2012, and was successful in being chosen as part of the team to play in the inter district tournament several weeks later. It was playing in this tournament that he caught the eye of a Scotland U16 coach, and he then received an email in June 2012 inviting him to attend the Squad Training/Inter District Tournament at the Inverclyde Sports Facility in Largs.

Alan thoroughly enjoyed his experience at the tournament and is now looking forward to the forthcoming year after being selected to become part of the U16 Scotland squad.
Even though he has just moved into the under-16 squad his goal would be to progress through the age groups and in the future perhaps one day perform with team GB at the Olympic games.
